SINGER NO. 1 Approx. 1880.
This machine was the first model built and sold by “THE SINGER COMPANY” USA – I t was originally sold as a treadle operated machine. Very few treadle tables still exist today and many of these machines were later driven by a small electric motor. There was some dispute as to the owner of the design, Singer fought for the patent rights for many years. The man “Singer” was more of a marketer than an inventor, and was apparently extremely adept at using the best devises in the patent Courts”. He also sold a huge number of sewing machines.
IT ALL STARTED WITH THIS,
THE FAMOUS “SINGER NO. 1”
